Mr Wilks - so you are using an indy, not a BMW dealer for servicing, is that right? If so you dont think its longer important to have FBMWSH, if so why is that? The reason I ask is the my 2009 31K miler 35i needs a service this week and I have been thinking about moving away from BMW to do that, mostly on a cost basis. I can afford to take it to BMW but I feel they are slightly ripping me off, ie they quoted me an extra £100 for a set of plugs but couldn't tell me for definite whether the car needs them!!!mr wilks wrote: ↑Sat Oct 07, 2017 9:21 pm So i left the car with my indy earlier in the week & collected it yesterday . 49k covered so had gearbox oil changed along with oil + filter ( more for my own self as it was only done a few thousand miles ago ) plus changed from the factory Msport to H&R lowering springs . Running short of tasks now

Simple answer is i trust my indy way more than i trust any franchised BMW agent i know the work gets done once & gets done right . He is ex master tech BM trained & can't fault his approach , expertise or his rates . I know several other forum members have now started using him too so i'm not just blowing smoke up the guys arse .stijohnny wrote: ↑Sun Dec 10, 2017 6:00 pmMr Wilks - so you are using an indy, not a BMW dealer for servicing, is that right? Your 2009 31k car ? Should already have had plugs imo but perhaps it hasn't yet had its Ins2 due to lowish miles for year ?

Service regime being
oil
ins1
oil
ins2 then at 7/8 years regardless of miles id be wanting a ins2 with plugs to have been done .
I do accept that technically you could go another 20k or 30k but for the minimal spend why would you ?
The whole long life service regime to me is there to appeal to fleet buyers who peddle the cars on at 3yrs after spending the least amount possible to stay in warranty as a private owner id rather go overboard on the routine stuff

Yes I'm not sold on the 2 year oil changes
Think I'd rather change every year

I thought with condition based servicing the other older way of servicing was done away with.mr wilks wrote: ↑Sun Dec 10, 2017 8:53 pmService regime being

I know the cars still get oil every year and a bigger service every other year unless hitting higher mileage but on the E89 it doesnt ask for ins1 or ins2.
Not that I agree with this but I am sure BMW say upwards of 45,000 miles before changing plugs.

So if you bought for eg a 10 or 12 yr old Bmw with 30k miles & original plugs you would not expect to change them until the 45k recommendation ?Nictrix wrote: ↑Sun Dec 10, 2017 9:54 pmI thought with condition based servicing the other older way of servicing was done away with.mr wilks wrote: ↑Sun Dec 10, 2017 8:53 pmService regime being

Id say a lower mile / higher age car had more reason to change plugs sooner than a higher mile much newer model but that's just my thought
I bought my 35i on 49k at 8yrs old / plugs were changed in 2015 at 40k with a stamped Ins2 ( Indy ) if not i would have had them done straight away

As I said I dont agree with BMW. Ours was changed a few years ago while getting a service and had to almost force the dealer to change them as they said they didnt need to be changed. One of the reasons to avoid dealers I suppose.mr wilks wrote: ↑Sun Dec 10, 2017 10:18 pmSo if you bought for eg a 10 or 12 yr old Bmw with 30k miles & original plugs you would not expect to change them until the 45k recommendation ?Nictrix wrote: ↑Sun Dec 10, 2017 9:54 pmI thought with condition based servicing the other older way of servicing was done away with.mr wilks wrote: ↑Sun Dec 10, 2017 8:53 pm

For sure , to me the regimes are simply boxes to be ticked to ensure warranty remains in place .

BMW dealers just work to the BMW rule book it would seem. It's great for me on my daily as I do about 24000 a year , but I tend to do more preventative maintenance on my Zed. The nice thing about the Zed is that most of the mechanicals are the same as other BMW models and at least you can get to them. Before I had mine I did toy with the idea of a Boxster but all the horror stories plus where the engine is just turned me off. Can't wait for its enforced hibernation to finish.
