Indeed they are water cooled.

Time I quit posting on here I think, spouting without facts in place as usual.

Ha ha.... dont be daft John, and in reality the water cooling wont really help the old oil seal bearing issues...

Its just that turbo technology has come on a long way,and oils are so much better..... Leads to a better life for the turbo.

Like anything though,it will have an infinite life, like any bearing.....

Hopefully just a tongue in cheek comment

When I bought mine I was leaving it running for a few minutes after a blast...it still ran the pump afterwards which I thought was odd. This lead me to digging online and pulling up the technical pdfs. Years ago the jap turbo and ford peeps were putting turbo timers on the car to do the same thing. Now it is automated to a certain extent. But as already said the best thing for the engine is very regular oil changes which is what I have always done with my cars. BMW reps always ask me why... I gave up bothering to explain

Yep stuck in the dark ages..

Escort cosworths used to have a reputation for popping turbo's at 60k hence the turbo timers and driving sedately for a couple of miles before shut down, as Gaz says how times change. Well it's good to now know the blowers are well cooled on the zed.

Yep and I think those turbos were just oil cooled, not oil + water, hence when you switch off the oil instantly evaporates and the turbo keeps spinning with no oil.

I started with a turbo car way back in 1980 and it was always the done thing to let it cool gently after a run - 30sec plus was the norm - the car never suffered any turbo failure in 125k miles - the waste gate used to stick shut as it was exhaust gas operated.
Certainly no cooling tho!
You don't stop playing when you get old - You get old when you stop playing!
So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.

Well that's a very nice thing to say James.....I have to say I think there'll be quite a few sniggers in disagreement though..

However I do seriously appreciate the comment.

This thread has me looking at E89s now! Must admit I see a lot more of these on the road than E85/6s.

Great looks retractable hard top, all the power you need and a great sound.

Slightly bias yes but do I need I go on?

just that the 35is sounds fab on a cold startup (Aston Martin anyone?), goes like stink and has sexy kit like heated steering wheel, adaptive lighting etc. Oh, did I mention the power? 8)
Why is it that people who can't take advice always insist on giving it?

I have always loved the look of the E89 and with its folding hard top as well makes it a complete all rounder too.
