E86 MOT & Insepction II

Post by LewisB » Sun Apr 30, 2017 6:04 pm

Afternoon all,

So my Z4 coupe is due its first MOT and service during my ownership.

It's going to go to a well recommended BMW Indy rather than the dealers.

So I'm planning to have:

Inspection II
Gearbox oil change
Differential oil change
Differential input flange greased (slight knocking/clunking)

It led me to think are there any other maintenance things I should be considering? Belts or water pump for example?

My car is 2007 and has just done 60,000 miles.

Any comments or help appreciated.

Thanks,

Lewis.

Water pump could go at any time or last a fair bit longer. Mine went at less mileage.

how do you know the diff input flange is the source of clunking?

I don't for definite. However, the articles on here lead me to believe that it is. I'll ask the garage to check it out for me and investigate further.

Rear springs? They're prone to cracking.
DISA valve? Probably fine if you've not had any lean codes come up but worth checking.
Rocker cover gasket?
Wheel alignment? If you've not had it done I'd at least get it checked (even if its all fine).

Not sure about belts, not looked into those... yet :fuelfire:

I'm affraid you are better of replacing the o-ring of the diff. Knocking is the beginning of the end.
Further: check the rear subframe bushes for play, the diff mounts for play. Belts are worth looking after but i think the can survive for another inspection. Same for the water pump.

Are there indicators that water pump / alternator should look to be changed or just a sudden failure?

Not sure about water....

Alternator replaced twice on other BM's. One where it wasn't charging the battery properly. Failed close to home, lights etc dimmed. Almost total loss of power (I was flooring it and only about 10mph). Pretty much the whole dash lit up because there wasn't enough juice in the system. Parked up and tried to start it again and it wouldn't. You can charge the battery back up at home but during driving it won't charge... so enough to maybe get you to the indie if he's close by!

Another time alternator was making a tapping noise. Sounded like the engine and the car was going to blow up. Hadn't failed but sounded like it was on its way out, so replaced.

Not really something you can maintain I don't think. No point replacing prematurely either. Buy and store in the garage if you want, if that's the problem you / indie can sort it pretty quickly. I'm assuming pump is the same sort of thing, but like I said no personal experience of that.

It's the oil seal ring on the input shaft. 33107505602
