E86 Inspection II

Post by flight174z » Sat Feb 11, 2017 4:28 pm

My e86 is due a service in around 600 miles. According to the record, inspection 1 has been performed, but there is no evidence of inspection 2 yet. The last service was an oil change, so it is due an inspection this time. I was planning on booking into Sytner Nottingham as one of the headlights is not self leveling so they should hopefully be able to sort this at the same time (at additional cost). I believe the inspection 2 price at Sytner is around £500 - does this sound about right?

An independent equivalent seems to run at about £250 - is it worth using Sytner? Current history is mainly independent BMW specialists - I'm not too bothered about the final value of the car so I am not especially precious about it only getting looked at by BMW - it just seems to make sense given a garage I tried before advised that it needed to go to BMW to diagnose what is causing the headlight issue. Any thoughts?

Fine. There is one in Nottingham that I could try. Are the xenon's difficult to sort out when they aren't working as I was surprised the first place that I went to could not help

If you don't go to Sytner for your service I would be interested where you do go in Nottingham.

Regarding Sytner I would pop in and see them regarding the cost. Can only speak from experience I was put off going when I took my e85 to them but they were great with me when my e89 needed repairs last year. It's made me consider taking mine to them when it's due it's servicr later this year.

I was quoted £429 for my e86.

Plug your details in on the BMW website and most dealerships should match it:

It's the headlight I'm concerned with. Along with the additional work that sytner/BMW could suggest at crazy prices...

I will run the details through there again. Thanks for the link. I haven't looked into specialists much before. I put 60k on my last car using generic garages and no issues. Sold at 100k with the buyer not really interested in the garages that did the services

Inspection 2 on the 3.0si is a joke at the prices quoted. It's basically an oil plus filters change, maybe some spark plugs and then visual checks. Do the first bit for say £150 in parts and pay a decent indie an hour's labour to provide a health check and you'll probably get a more comprehensive result. Don't forget brake fluid if more than 2 years.

Self levelling problem is most likely to be the arm that attaches to the suspension which isn't a hard fix as far as I know.

Can confirm I was quoted £429 from Dick Lovett BMW Bath yesterday as mine is due Ins 2 this month

Still considering whether to keep the FBMW SH going on mine - this is starting to feel excessive for a 10 year old car??

That's the same quote I had from BMW Cooper Reading. I'm in a similar dilemma to you as to whether to keep the service with BMW or go to a good local Indy.

How much value does main dealer service history add to a sale......

Would of thought not too much once the car is over 5 years old as long as it has been serviced somewhere when it should have been

I was also quoted 430 from Cotswold bmw in Gloucester earlier in the week. I then phoned a well regarded Indy in Gloucester and was quoted 330.

All in all It looks like I'll go down the Indy route. A large number of Indys have ex bmw techs that wanted to branch out and try to make more money, so same service and knowledge as bmw dealers anyway.

Interestingly the garage I'm looking at (Pritchards) in Gloucester state that a service from them will still satisfy bmw's warrenty requirements, not that our cars are still in their warranty period.

Also a service history from the dealer isn't going to add any value to your car, just stop it loosing any value against similar examples. So if a dealer service history is just an attraction, is a full service history that includes approved independent garages going to make a potential buyer turn around and walk away? In my opinion the extra money spent on dealer servicing after 5 years is dead money.

Some valuable views here - would be good to hear from those who are maintaining their dealer history and why though??
