Roundozo's zed - tinkering, maintenance and upgrades - update 1.06.16

Post by Roundozo » Thu Jun 02, 2016 9:47 am

Thanks for all the kind posts guys. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it down this Sunday RickRob, family stuff.

MM, be careful using the plastic alignment tool. It was that that caused all of the issues. My Indy took my clutch off, re aligned with his metal one and the gearbox went straight back on. Not sure the tolerance is good enough on those little plastic jobbies.

RickRob please accept my sincerest apologies but I am soon to be leaving the whippy club. I know this hurts you greatly however I want to try out the stubby for a bit to see how the other half live. All is not lost, I shall keep the whippy in the shed in case I change my mind again.

Picked this up today and she’ll be swapped over on my lunch.

Finally got round to fitting my air scoop! Also painted the two support struts as like most of them the coating seems to have come off. Bit of black hammerite seems to have done the job.

Before and after (again, I apologise as the car is once again filthy!)

The next installment has arrived. Going to attempt to replace these bad boys today. Of the old ones, one is leaking and the other ejected itself a few months ago. It's bumper off time so wish me luck!

Sorry for the order of photos there, not sure what happened.

Jobs done;
>Fit new headlight washer jets (still need a new cap)
>Remove, clean and repair fog lights (one tab had broken after hitting a pheasant).
>Fit LED sidelights (had these for ages but never got round to fitting them)
>Finally sorted the alignment of the OS headlight. Now it looks right.

Pretty much done however i have also broken the securing tabs for the bumper so waiting to pick up a replacement on Saturday before it all goes back together.

Just a little update as I've not been on the site for months. Arrival of our fist child has helped with that! Lol.

New disks and pads with calipers painted copper.

In other news our tow car/family car (VW tiguan) decided to eat it's oil pump and knacker the engine. Balls. 2.5k later and it's being fixed. Ouchy.

Oh and finally, after nearly 5 years of zed ownership I've finally bought some new wiper blades.

 holidays for the next few years while the little guy doesn't really care where he is. Tbh the caravan inside is rather nice. They certainly have come on a bit. I can text this one to turn the heating on etc. Fancy egh! Lol.

P.s as a 33 year old man though, I think we're some of the youngest caravaners.

Hey stranger!

Car looks great (apart from the stubby!). I'm very envious of your skills and what you've done with your Zed.

I have to get the wheels, calipers and disk back thingies on mine all refurbed this winter. Copper-coloured calipers could be the way to go. I'm still umming and erring about getting the bearing shells done as well, if only for peace of mind. (Mrs R has yet to discover that the main benefit of us getting the Cooper S is that I can take the Zed off the road and spend money on it!)

The little guy looks great - hope he's doing well.

Am finding it difficult to be excited by the caravan!

Any chance of you going to the Pistonheads Sunday Service at Goodwood on 17 December?

Hi Rick,

Thanks for the kind comments. The zed is a labour of love but I still persist. She's just ticked over 102k now so probably worth more to me than on the second hand market.

Copper is nice against black I think and it's not too shouty either.

We only have the zed while the Tig is getting its new engine. I'm surprised my wife hasn't yet commented that I have a silly impractical car. Saying that we do have a little train station nearby so she's hasn't been entirely stuck without her car.

Little guy is going good thanks although he's got a cold ATM and struggling to sleep without choking so that's rather scary for first time parents!

Haha, we like camping but also like the luxuries so it's the best of both worlds. I appreciate it's not everyone's cup of tea. Once your hooked though Rick...

I did see that but we are busy that Sunday. Most likely more family visits. To our parents, we've suddenly become more interesting however I think they just want to come over for baby cuddles.

I do fancy meeting up again though but at this rate it'll be in the new year.

All the best.
