1) Wait nearly three weeks for the 3” Mangowalk to arrive
2) Try and unscrew old aerial by hand – fail
3) Find mole grips, mash-up old aerial but remove successfully
4) Try to remove remaining threaded stump from aerial base
5) shear-off remaining threaded stump :x
6) Swear profusely
7) Phone stealers to order in new base P/No. 65.20.6.913.897 (pay £10 for the base and £6.50 for the aerial!)
8 ) Wait two days for it to arrive, get woken early morning by stealers text telling me it had arrived
9) Look at TIS – it’s a ‘screw’ holding it on.
10) Cant find stubby screw driver. Nip to Tescos and buy a disposable multi-pack of screwdrivers (£1 – bargain! – note the word disposable)
11) Try stubby Philips screwdriver – nope :headbang:
12) Swear
13) Discover screw 'kind of' undoes with an allen key
14) Discover, when off, it is actually a T25 torx bit
15) Fit new base
16) Fit new aerial
17) Consider hanging up my modding hat for good
18) :)

Why are the simple quick jobs never quick and simple and always end up costing more – over 100% more in this instance!?

The above is for those of you who didnt manage to do one of the simplest mods in 30secs

And for those of you that did, appreciate that it did!

Stubbies are the way to go. if you havent done the stubby mod yet, dont let the above put you off - it 'should' be a simple mod.

Mine was 'similar':

1) wait 9 days for 3", 5" and 7" aerials to arrive
2) decide 5" looks naff and 7" is too big
3) remove old one with hand pressure only
4) fit 3" one with hand pressure only

I also got one of those stupid texts a couple weeks ago.....what a stupid time to send out a message!!!

is the aerial base easy to get to and is there a standard aerial connection onto wiring loom?

i'm still thinking a shark fin may look ok

took me 25 seconds to fit the stubby, does this mean my car is fastest hehe

Mine was very complicated:

1. Post a suggestion for a charity in a thread.
2. Win 'competition'
3. Donate money to Cancer Research
4. Stubby arrives.
5. Get car out of garage.
6. Unscrew old one.
7. Screw in new one.

25 seconds is quick. My stubby is on route and I will be aiming for a Usain Bolt timed fit

I think i kind of knew i was lining myself up for the "mine was done in 30secs" comments!

Perhaps we should have, rather than 'fastest lap times', 'fastest stubby switch over'........i think i know where i'll be.

As for the Q Taz - everything is easy when you know how and have the right tools :)

There is a small box on the inside of the boot under the aerial base with the cables that run back to the head unit. you'll be able to feel in the centre of the box the torx bolt head. the bolt goes through the body into the base if the aerial base. clamping the aerial base on one side and the box on the other to the body

any one who can change to stubby is less than 25 secs will require a gender test hehe

Where's the thread about THAT dude... erm..... lady? :?

Just managed to sheer mine off too... Found that oem aerial makes for a convincing javelin when hurled with enough vigour and uttering the magic words 'MOTHERFU...'!

Considering filing off the final 1mm of remaing thread, dabbing with a bit of matt black paint and calling it the stubbiest of the stubbies... Radio's all crap now that Sir Tel's gave up the morning slot anyway!

PMSL  Sorry mate but reminds me when i lost it i had just got my Calibra back from bodyshop after new bonnet fitted and sprayed after a head on the car looked superb so after giving her a wash i popped the bonnet up but forgot to put the wipers back down and all i saw were little flakes of silver paint falling onto the firewall  :x :x remember my old man saying i thought you was pissed off when the bucket shot across the front garden and the neighbours started putting their fingers in the kids ears

hehe... sounds about right!

My Dad had a similar experience; rebuilding an MGB he'd successfully straightened out all the panels beautifully, primed the bonnet and hung it from the garage roof to dry... next day he forgot the bonnet was hung there and opened the garage door fully, knocking the bonnet off and bending it quite spectacularly!

Obviously, he then had to spend a bit of time redoing said bonnet... and the door that he punched in the midst of his hissy fit! :headbang:

I think i was rather fortune - mine just unscrewed with ease.

Have you tried drilling the screw out instead of resorting to getting a new base? If you can drill the center away you should be able to retrieve the rest of the bits.

Did think about it... but where it's sheered off it's left kind of a domed top, so would have to be extremely careful not to slip and end up with a nasty scratch. Seeing as the replacement base is around a tenner... probably not worth the risk!
