DAB in an E85

Post by Tom Dick » Tue Nov 28, 2017 1:17 pm

So I'm looking at putting a single DIN head unit in as I cannot stand BBC radio anymore
In previous cars I've used a splitter like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Autoleads-PC6- ... B00FRGBLIW but these don't work with an amplified aerial.

Is the aerial on a 2004 E85 amplified or not?

Also any recommendations for a fascia plate supplier.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I believe the amplifier is integral to the mounting of the aerial base in the rear wing, so you can't bypass it to get a DAB signal. I have a powered stick on DAB aerial on the inside of the windscreen of the Z4, used with a Pioneer DAB head unit. I've also used the same type of aerial successfully with OEM retro fitted DAB modules in E91 3 series and R55 Mini.

Oops, looks like I didn't share the link to the antenna. Here it is...

I've got a DAB antenna in the boot - a magnetic unit stuck to the bottom of the boot lid. Work a treat. Great signal.
Might be this one.

Thanks Greg, just what I need.

I’ve put a wind screen mount aerial in the Evo but the reception is terrible. I think I’ll try the magnetic base on in the boot.

99ron, when you say stuck to the bottom of the boot lid, do you mean the antenna is pointing down into the boot?

Yep. Exactly that. Stick it in the corner and it doesn't get in the way. Boot is deep enough for the short antenna. I had a windscreen antenna in an RX8 I used to run and it dropped the signal on some stations all over the place in a way this one never does. I'd take a pic but the Z is all wrapped up in the garage for the Winter.
