Vibration through the steering wheel after braking from high speeds?

Post by RyanB88 » Fri Jul 28, 2017 7:45 am

Hi

As title

Already replaced the wheels and tyres so I've ruled that out

Already replaced the lollipops

Any other suggestions?

My brake discs look fairly new. would the tracking being out cause this?

Worn track rod ends? Try using a pry bar to check for movement where there shouldn't be any.

Is it while breaking from speed? Could be a warped disc(s) they don't need to be worn/old for it to happen

Yeh, only seems to do it at higher speeds, never noticed it round town, only dual cRriGewayd or motorways

Discs - mine did exactly the same, looked to have recent discs too! Changed them out, no more vibration.

My vote would be discs too... had the same on a previous car and resolved it by changing the discs!

It can be tested using a special gauge at a decent garage if you don't want to just throw money at it and hope for the best!

If it's not a warped disc then like smartbear said it's probably a track rod end!

Try grabbing a front wheel each side & feeling for any looseness or play ( better with car slightly jacked but rubber still grounded)
Feel front calipers after a run to see if one is hotter than other
Warped disc as already mentioned is also a very possible culprit

Hmm the discs look quite new - I believe they're the mtec grooved and vented - if I was to replace these, are they a good bet for replacement? I love the look and they seem to have good stopping power too!

Another vote for warped discs here. I inherited a van that had warped discs and couldn't feel it at lower speeds, it was Awful at a reasonable speed though.

I don't have any 1st hand experience with Mtec but a fair few people on here have them and like them. They certainly look good too. Once mine are worn I'm going to put Mtec on.

Warped disc and/or sticking calliper would be my guess too.

The calliper should be hot to the touch.

My front discs are pretty new and I have the same issue, previous owner mentioned he had done a little run round Silverstone for 20 mins so my guess is that they overheated and warped...I'll get round to it soon and sort them

Automotive brakes engineer here

If they're new discs it's possible that they weren't fitted straight on the hub, might be misaligned.
Try removing the front discs and refitting them

It's highly unlikely to be the rears too if you only get it through the wheel

I used to have this when I first started using the car after a winter layup, it lasted about 4 weeks and then went away. I had the exact same experience on my Mini when it was parked up for 6 weeks, then it went away.

My theory is that when the car is parked up for a long time the disc surface gets surface corrosion from rain exposure but the area where the pad is does not. when the brakes are then used the surface corrosion is rubbed away faster than the uncorroded section which leaves high spots. Over time, it all levels itself out.

You should be able to establish if it is discs by jacking up and spinning the wheels, you will hear/feel any high spots as the wheel spins.

I'd lay money on it being warped front discs. I fitted new MTec Grooved discs and EBC Red Stuff pads all round back in April just before Craig3.2s Galloway run. On the way home from Scotland I was aware of the steering wheel 'shimmying' when braking between 50-30mph.
A week or two later I had my front discs skimmed whilst on the car at Suthers Star Garage, Walmer Bridge, Preston. Superb job ! You end up with two 'new' perfectly parallel braking surfaces spinning true in relation to the hub. Also there is the added advantage that a disc that has warped due to excessive heat is very unlikely to do so again after skimming....fit new discs and you may find yourself back in the same boat again :(
I fitted a new set of front pads as advised when I had the discs skimmed and have done almost 3000 miles of fairly 'enthusiastic' driving including the National Meet weekend with no recurrence of the problem at all.
