Car hit me and drove off, B*stard

Post by chriswoodward » Thu Mar 05, 2015 4:58 pm

Yeah so as the title says really I was driving down a main road when someone came straight out of a side road and crashed into the driver side rear wheel at around 10-15mph. He then sped off as soon as I got out of the car. Reported to the police but obviously little they can do.

Sorry to hear that.

The honest law abiding citizens in this Country are becoming fewer and further between unfortunately.
No respect for other people or their property and no fear of the law anymore.

Did you not get their number plate? I thought it was a criminal offence to leave the scene of an accident, of course assuming they weren't already a criminal with no insurance or in a stolen car...

If the camber bolt is just spinning then it would suggest either the camber arm or rear trailing arm is goosed. Not the end of the world and can be picked up from a breaker for not too much money.

Either way hopefully you get it sorted.

You can leave the scene, (fear for of your own safety, emergency, etc,) but have to report it to the Police within 24 hours, before you. Can be done for "Failing to report an accident"

OP , make sure your report it, in case he already has, but also for your own insurance purposes.

Yeah I have reported it but unfortunately only got a partial plate, looking at it a little closer today the rear bumper actually stood up really well 99% of it was actually paint transfer.

Had claimed on my insurance earlier but just cancelled it to wait until I have got it down to a decent garage I know to see what they think its all going to cost.

But cancelling your claim doesn't mean the incident will be wiped from the records!

Even though you don't want the claim to continue, you will still need to declare the incident to your own insurer, and when getting quotes from other insurers at renewal in the future. Your contract stipulates that you must inform them of all claims, regardless of amount of damage or fault.

I had this a few years ago, I dont think it effected my premiums - but not sure

I have already informed them, hence why I had to cancel my claim.

I don't know if you skim read my post but I did state and you quoted that I had claimed on my own insurance so of course my insurance does know about it, I informed them of the incident straight away.

I just didn't feel the excess was justified considering the damage so cancelled the claim.

It also turned out the vast majority of what looked like scratches was actually paint transfer and cleaned off! Result

When somebody whacked into my wife's car - her insurance went up - They loaded it by £15 as I remember. (sheila's wheels)
We didn't claim nor involve her insurers in any shape or form yet they increased the premium as we were "more likely" to have another bump!

Oh yeah I know mine went up after my e46 was rear ended whilst I was stationary at a pedestrian crossing for the same reason!

Insurers are bastards.

I can't see how the risk goes up if somebody else make a mistake? Im puzzled!

The usual bending of statistics.

Use it to your advantage and buy a colour that is not so common, as they base the insurance risk rating on how many claims there were for that car, in that colour, the fewer there are the lower the premium.

That is what I learned from buying the Audi as the number of incidents on that colour was lower than with other colours, the premium was lower. In white for example it would have been too much to insure for my children.

Sadly they simply run off the statistic that for any incident (fault regardless) you are 50% more likely to be involved in something identical the following year.

In my mind, non-fault is just that and your premium loading should be applied to the party at fault.
