Chipped Screen

Post by ronk » Mon Apr 03, 2017 8:52 pm

Ive got stone damage on the screen - its about 5p size - they talk of the repair as first choice - and it has to be done by Autowindscreens.
Its on our 335 and it has the head up display panel and the electronic bits for lights etc !!

Im a bit worried - should i be? I've read some horror stories but not about this company.

My son had his screen replaced when the car was just a couple of months old (on his 140). I called the insurance company to request an original screen if it could not be repaired, and to be fair - they did do a proper job. He has the multi camera system with road sign camera reading and all the other gismos and the guy did know what he was doing.

Obviously, you never leave them out of your site ....

i don't really fancy an aftermarket screen - if indeed they are available?
I suspect they will buy from the BMW source.

Default is aftermarket. You have to specify that you want OEM otherwise they won't supply it.

My policy says - their chosen windscreen company - but no mention of 'screen manufacturer .
Their first choice is a repair - I'm not that confident that it will work.

I had a chip fixed by these guys a few weeks ago on my XF
Excellent job and totally invisible. No qualms about using them again. Cost £25 rather tan £75 excess for a new screen.
As for oem screens - they come from the same company in the case of Jaguar. Are just stamped
Pilkington not Jaguar, but same screen. Can't speak for BMW but expect the same factory for oem and aftermarket
Jaguar F-Type 3.0 Supercharged V6 S, Stratus Grey, LSD, Active Exhaust, CF wheels, Performance brakes, Sports seats and mods ongoing
Gone but not forgotten Z4 3.0i SE Roadster ///M front, Red ///M leather seats, Aero sills

When ordering the BMW screen, it took a couple of weeks longer to arrive at Autoglass as the patent ones are only in stock. The guy who fitted the OEM one told us that the patent ones were so variable that often they did not fit properly, or had leaks etc.

Hi Ron,

If you want a BMW screen make sure you say to your insurers you want one with the BMW logo sourced from the dealer, insurers can be quite cunning in their terminology and will say an OEM fit screen will be supplied which isn't the same, you might find your insurers though will have a limit as to what they are prepared to fork out on a screen as the BMW screens are crazy money so you might have to pay the difference if you want the real deal. End of the day there shouldn't be any difference in the glass quality but its the fitment.

Tim.

I suspect as in any walk of life, there are excellent windscreen repairmen and the odd bad one working for all of the companies.

The windscreen was repaired - i was certain it was a replace job but the fella has done a very good job - there are some small marks, akin to water marks but I would rather have that than ripping out the factory fitted screen.

If it had come to replacing the screen, the depot manager said it would have to be a BMW marked screen as BMW dealers will nor re calibrate the system on a non marked screen even tho they are both manufactured by Pilkington.

I feel reassured that if it happens again, it will all be fine. The repair is guaranteed while I own the car.

Top marks Autowindscreens - Newcastle.
