New Z4 Owner -East Midlands
Hiya All,
I have just become a proud owner of a lovely Z4 SDrive 3.0i Convertible. I am in complete awe! Had my eye on it for sometime now and as my midlife crises is kicking in, I thought why not start it with this purchase!
I have had it for a few days now and its simply awesome! There are a few things I would like to do on it in the up and coming months. Firstly its the tyres....Its currently got;
Bridgestone RF's 225/40/18 on the fronts and 225/35/18 on the rears. They will need changing soon so I was wondering whether to go for the same again or look at alternatives. On all my other cars I have had conti's which I have always been happy with.
is ok OK to have the different widths on the fronts to the rears
Any recommendations?
Cheers
Sunny

Welcome to the forum, the general consensus here is to ditch the run flats as they deaden the feel of the ride particularly on the E89

Hi and welcome to the forum OP.
The tyres will be different sizes front and rear because most (maybe all) 18 inch rims are staggered - the rear wheels are wider than the fronts.
Everyone who has switched to non-runflat tyres always reports positively - I'll find out soon when I swap mine!
The other bonus is non-runflats are about half the price!

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the messages.
Here is a picky of my beauty! I do like the idea of run flats as there is no spare wheel etc etc... but if people are going for Non Runflats I may decide to go the same way...
The local garage near me also stated that the rears should be a wider tyre so will prob go for 255/35/18 and have the front as 225/40/18... how does that sound?

Welcome. I'd be very surprised if you've got 225 on the rear. I would expect 255 on the rear but if you go to f1 tyres website and put your ref in,it normally will give you the original tyre sizes. I would drop the run flats though they really are pants

Most people who go for non-runflats carry a can of tyre sealant (Holts Tyreweld is an example) and a compressor.
Those sizes you've just mentioned look like a typo. The sizes you quoted in your first post sound right - those are what my Coupe has.
You need a wider tyre on the back because the rear wheel rims are wider. But to keep the diameter of the tyre the same the wider ones are a slightly lower profile - the aspect ratio of the tyre is a percentage of the width, so a 225/40 has a sidewall that is 40% of 225mm and a 255/35 has a sidewall that is 35% of 255mm - i.e near enough the same.
If you change significantly you're likely to end up with an inaccurate speedometer.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
